Behaviourism: operant conditioning Flashcards
What did skinners research show
Skinner suggested that learning is an active process whereby humans and animals operate on their environment
What are the 3 types of consequences of behaviour
Positive reinforcement * Negative reinforcement * Punishment
What is positive reinforcement
is receiving a reward when a certain behaviour is performed, making it more likely the behaviour is repeated, e.g. praise from teacher.
What is negative reinforcement
Increases the probability that a behaviour will be repeated because it leads to an escape from an unpleasant situation, e.g. or feeling less scared when running away from a phobic stimulus.
What is punishment
an unpleasant consequence of behaviour, for example being shouted at by a teacher.
what is operant conditioning
Type of learning that takes place because of actions and rewards
