Behaviour Modification (CBT, Token Economics, Etc.) Flashcards
Systematic Desensitisation
Type of exposure therapy based on reciprocal inhibition in which aims to remove the fear response of a phobia
Reciprocal Inhibition (Define)
A technique in behaviour therapy that aims to replace an undesired response with a desired one by counterconditioning
The Process of Reciprocal Inhibition
Client (while relaxed) imagines a hierarchy of stressful situations – if anxiety is felt then they start again. Eventually after a few sessions the client can tolerate the situations, and treatment ends when the client is desensitised.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Define)
A form of talking therapy which can be used to treat people with a wide range of mental problems
CBT Overview - What is helps patients with, what it believes? (Think - thoughts, feelings, behaviour)
Helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviours. Believes it’s not the events that upset us but the meanings we give them.
CBT and Negative Thoughts - What may they result in, how is this dealt with?
Negative thoughts may result in negative emotions, which may effect behaviour. CBT focuses on learning and practising new skills that can be used in real life situations – coping skills.
Token Economics
A form of behaviour modification in which people earn tokens for exhibiting a desired behaviour and can later exchange tokens for privileges or treats
Advantages of tokens
- Don’t lose reinforcing value as quickly (e.g., a child may get sick of lollies)
- If token given immediately, the child may stay involved in the activity because they can exchange their tokens for a number of things like food
