Self-Concept
Changes considerably early in life and then settles. When it is settled, it is used to evaluate the world, providing a sort of lens through which to view everything that is not-self.
• Who you are in terms of categories.
Self-Esteem
refers to how you feel about your self.
• The evaluation of one’s self.
• We evaluate our selves within three categories:
• Appearance
• General performance
• Social interactions
Social Identity
refers to the presentation of your self that you make to the world.
Self-Efficacy
Is concerned with a sense of our own ability.
Ideal Self
A view of our self as we would really like it to be rather than how it actually is.
Ought Self
A self that is made up of what we believe that society wants from us, a self that upholds the moral and legal standards of society.
Carl Roger’s Self actualized/actualizing
- They are steadily growing and evolving.
- They are open to experience and not defensive.
- They trust themselves, seeking guidance but making their own decisions.
- They have harmonious relations with others without needing to be liked by everyone.
- They live fully in the present, neither dwelling on the past nor looking to the future.
Core Beliefs
Basic beliefs that each of us has that represent our fundamental view of the world and which colour our perceptions and our behaviors throughout most, if not all, of our lives.
Beating the Blues
o Accept yourself for what you are.
o Challenge any thoughts that are negative about one’s self. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
o Consider positive points about oneself.
o Treat oneself with the same respect you would accord to others.
Self-conciousness
the degree to which they monitor their own selves.
Self
made up of a concept of the self (itself made up of beliefs, attitudes, values and opinions), self-esteem and social identity, in all of which there is a great deal of individual variation.
Evoked Culture
May make behavior look like personality.
Transmitted Culture
Beliefs and practices that are handed down.
