What was the causes of BFTE?
1) A change to the northern polar jet stream, drew cold air to the UK from the east.
2) The cold air picked up moisture over the North Sea bringing snow.
3) East Coast had lots of snow.
4) 1st March a depression called storm Emma moved in from the SE causing more snow.
What were the social impacts of BFTE?
- 10 reported deaths
- Water pipes burst/frozen
- Worried the UK could run out of gas
What were the economical impacts of BFTE?
-British Airways cancelled hundreds of short term flights.
-People were unable to travel to work.
- 125 schools in North Yorkshire were closed, parents had to take time off work.
What were the environmental impacts of BFTE?
- Damaged crops (50cm snow)
- Increased use of coal/gas
- Destroyed habitats as rural temperatures fell to -12 degrees

- Mountain rescue took district nurses around rural elderly patients homes.
- Met office issues a red weather warning.
- The army helped transport 200 NHS staff to and from hospitals in Scotland.
