Q

SA in the 60s

A

Period of silence due to state repression against protest action.
ANC and PAC had been banned under the Unlawful Organisations Act, 1960
Members of the movement were arrested and banning orders were enacted
The NP had increased the state’s ability to suppress protest with legislation
ANC and PAC had little influence as they were banned and had to adopt arms struggle
Political avenues of protest closed —> new form of protest emerged
Changes in Africa during the 60s (Congo Crisis) pushed the NP to militarise and quell uprisings in SA.
There wasn’t much protest as there was general economic stability for all races - hence the people saw no need for protest
This changed in the 70s due to intl. embargoes which push the people to protest as cost of living increases without wage increases
