When repairs to apparatus are needed, and the department mechanic determines that the
unit cannot respond or when the unit is unable to respond, the officer must promptly

o Approved by an on-scene Chief Officer.
o The cover has been determined to be free of stray voltage by the on-scene Utility
Company.
Rectangular or square electric manhole covers shall not be pulled by FDNY personnel.

DO NOT pull any electric manhole covers (or any cover if there is doubt as to its type) when:
o There is a manhole fire in the area; or
o Smoking or arcing is observed in an electric manhole or transformer vault.
Can round manhole covers be pulled ?
Round manhole covers can be removed by two firefighters utilizing manhole hooks.
Battalion vehicles carry two manhole hooks for use of this purpose.
Bereavement Leave of not more than two 15-hours tours or two 9-hour tours and one
15-hour tour may be granted by
the Deputy Chief to a member in case of:
- 1.1 Death in the member’s immediate family.
- 1.2 Death of member’s domestic partner.
- 1.3 Death in immediate family of member’s spouse or domestic partner
When Bereavement Leave is granted, the officer on duty in the member’s unit must
prepare a report (in duplicate) to
the Bureau of Personnel

the first hoseline is repositioned
Members operating on the upper
floors may also need to be withdrawn to a safe area IF no portable ladders are
positioned and readily available.
