Battle of Naseby (1645) Flashcards
What were three reasons for the outcome?
-Parliamentarians outnumbered Royalists 13k v 9k, so could sustain their losses
-Cromwell positioned NMA in field in which flanks were protected by hedges and boggy fields so was not vulnerable to cavalry charges from flanks
-New Model Army was well disciplined, well trained because of drill training. Cromwell’s ironsides (cavalry) stuck with infantry, while Prince Rupert’s cavalry deserted battle to loot a train, resulting in Royalist infantry collapsing
What were the roles of the leaders?
-Cromwell’s decision to position NMA in field with flanks protected by hedges and boggy fields meant they weren’t vulnerable to cavalry charges from flanks
-Cromwell’s decision to implement drill and training and strict discipline into NMA meant they stuck together, while Prince Rupert did not discipline army, resulting in their abandonment
