Basics of CNS Flashcards
What components make up to CNS?
- Cerebral hemispheres (brain)
- Brainstem and cerebellum
- Spinal cord
What components make up the PNS?
- Dorsal and Ventral Roots
- Spinal Nerves
- Peripheral Nerves

Identify the Dorsal, Ventral, Anterior, Posterior, Superior, Inferior, Rostral and Caudal aspects of the brain

Identify the 3 major parts of the brain stem

What is the midbrain responsible for?
- Eye movement
- Reflex responses to sound and vision
What is the pons of the brainstem responsible for?
- Feeding
- Sleep
What is the medulla region of the brainstem responsible for?
- Cardiovascular and respiratory centres
- Contains major motor pathways
Which cranial nerve nerve emerges from the pons?
Trigeminal nerve (CN V)

What is a sulci? Identify the major sulci of the brain

Sulcus= Groove or Furrow

Central sulcus - groove separates frontal and parietal lobes
Lateral sulcus - separates frontal and partietal from the temporal lobe
Lunate sulcus - groove in occipital cortex
What are Gyri? Identify the major Gyri of the brain
Gyrus= ridge or fold in brain

Where are the somatosensory and motor cortexes located?
- Motor cortex - in the pre-central gyrus
- Somatosensory cortex - in the post centreal gyrus

What is a fissure?
A large crack or split between adjacent large areas of brain
e.g. separates L + R Hemispheres
What functions is the frontal lobe responsible for?
- Higher cognition,
- Motor Function
- Speech
What functions is the parietal lung responsible for?
- Sensation
- Spatial Awareness
What functions is the temporal lobe responsible for?
- Memory
- Hearing
- Smell
What function is the occipital lobe responsible for?
Vision
What functions is the cerebellum responsible for?
- Co-ordination
- Motor Learning
Identify the lobes of the brain

Identify Structures 1-3

Identify 1-3

What is the corpus callosum of the brain?
Communicating fibres of white matter that connect the 2 cerebral hemispheres
