Basic Transfers and Walking Aids Flashcards
What are the most common reasons for walking aids being used?
To reduce loading on the lower limb thereby reducing pain
Compensation for structural and muscular weakness
Improve balance by increasing factors affecting stability
What factors are there to consider when selecting a suitable walking aid?
Degree of weight bearing permitted
Level of stability of patient
Anticipated level of activity
Age, general fitness, home circumstances, etc
What position should a patient be in when taking measurement for a walking aid?
They can be standing or lying, standing is the best
How do you find the correct level for elbow crutches?
Position the crutch ferrule 15cm to the side of the footwear, adjust the hand rest until level with the radial styloid (with elbow extended), the forearm cuff should be just below the elbow joint
All walking aids should be checked before use, what needs to be checked?
Condition of ferrules Condition of metal struts Crutch pegs fully engage Handgrips Securing bolts and screws Stability of aid on weight bearing
How do you find the correct level for Zimmer frames?
The elbows are in approximately 15 flexion prior to taking weight through the upper limbs
How do you find the correct level for walking sticks?
Use the radial styloid (with elbow extended) to a point on the floor 15cm out to the side of the foot
Or
Flex the elbow 15 degrees and use wrist position as a guide for the correct height, deduct 1cm from the measurement to allow for the ferrule if a wooden stick is to be cut to length.
