Basic Principles of Pharmacology Flashcards
Differentiate pharmacokinetics from pharmacodynamics
Pharmacokinetics: actions of the body on a drug - absorption, distribution, metqboliwm, excretion
Pharmacodynamics: actions of the drug on th body - receptors interactions, dose-response phenomena, mechanisms of therapeutic and toxic actions
What are intert binding sites?
Nonregulatory molecules that do not produce discernible effects
Buffer the concentration of a drug because bound drug does not contribute to the concentration gradient
What is Fick’s Law of Diffusion?
It predicts the rte of movement of molecules across a barrier
What are the drug receptor bonds in decreasing order of strength?
Covalent bonds
Hydrogen bonds, Ionic bonds, Van der Waals bond
Hydrophobic bonding
What is permeation?
It is the movement of drug molecules into and within biologic environments
What are the drugs that follow zero order kinetics?
