Basic Gero Flashcards
How do absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs differ in the older population?
Absorption = slow GI
slower gastric emptying
Distribution = a higher percentage of fat and a lower percentage of water
Fat-soluble drugs may stay in the body longer, and water-soluble drugs may have more concentrated effects.
Metabolism = Liver function decreases
slows the metabolism of medications, causing drugs to stay in the body longer, increasing the risk of side toxicity
Excretion = Kidney function declines
reducing the ability to eliminate waste and drugs from the body
