Aging/Biological,Psychosocial theories Flashcards
What are the three aging theories?
biological, sociocultural, psychosocial
Biological theory
Explain natural aging as a gradual, harmful, and unavoidable process that is built into our genes and affects everyone
Sociocultural theory
Describe how society affects older adults and how they influence society. These theories include disengagement, activity, subculture, age stratification, and person-environment fit
Psychological theory
focus on common mental and social issues that affect older adults.
What are the three biological theories?
wear-and-tear, cross-linkage, free radical
Wear-and-tear
that the body is like a machine that works well during its “warranty” period but will eventually break down after a certain amount of time
Cross-linkage
molecules that are usually separate can become connected through chemical reactions
Free radical
While organisms have defenses against cell damage, some damage is unavoidable and increases as they age
What are the three psychosocial theories?
disengagement, activity, continuity
Disengagement
As people age, they step back from their usual roles and focus more on themselves
Activity
Staying mentally and physically active in middle age is important for aging well
Continuity
As people age, their personality stay the same, and their behaviors become more predictable
