Basic Concepts in Human Anatomy and Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
What are the three approaches to anatomy?
- regional
- systemic
- clinical
Define Regional Approach
studying anatomy based on body region
(i.e. head, neck, trunk, lower limbs, upper limbs)
Define the Systemic Approach
study of anatomy based on organ system and how they work together
Define the Clinical approach to anatomy
combines regional and systemic approaches to studying anatomy to address clinical application
What is the anatomical position?
- Standing erect, face is anterior
- Feet are parallel & toes are anterior
- Arms are at the side with palms facing forward/anterior
What are the anatomical planes?
- Median
- Sagittal
- Frontal (coronal)
- Transverse (horizontal)
Define the median plane
- vertical plane
- divides body into right/left halves
- includes the whole body
Define the sagittal plane
- vertical plane
- parallel to the median plane
- describes movements front to back
- plane extends as far as arms move front to back
Define the front (coronal plane)
- vertical plane that divides the body into anterior/posterior
- describes movements side to side
- ex: hip abduction
Define the transverse (horizontal) plane
- divides the body into upper and lower halves
- describes movements that move into a horizontal orientation
- ex: neck rotation to left and right
What direction does the superior/cranial position describe?
towards the head
What direction does the inferior/caudal position describe?
towards the feet
What direction does the lateral position describe?
away from midline/median plane
What direction does the medial position describe?
towards midline/median plane
What direction does the anterior position describe?
towards front of the body
What direction does the posterior position describe?
towards back of the body
What direction does the proximal position describe?
near trunk/point of original
