Basal Ganglia & Cerebellum Flashcards
Name the three lobes of the cerebellum
Anterior
Posterior
Folluculonodular
What connects the cerebellum to the brain?
Peduncles - extension from pons
Superior
Middle
Inferior
Name the structure that makes up the central core of the cerebellum
Vermis
What makes up the grey matter of the cerebellum?
Folia and sulci
Describe the histology of the cerebellum
Molecular
Granule
Purkinje
What is the afferent supply to the cerebellum?
Spinal cord
Cerebral cortex
Vestibular apparatus
What is the efferent supply from the cerebellum?
Purkinje synapse with deep nuclei to co-ordinate motor tracts
Most synapse at thalamus and then onto motor cortex
Name the three functional divisions of the cerebellum
Vestibulocerebellum - vestibular nuclei (vestibulospinal)
Spinocerebellum - vermis, autonomic function
Ponotcerebellum - voluntary movement
If you have a midline cerebellar injury what will happen?
Disturbance of postural control
If you have a unilateral cerebellar injury what will happen?
Tremor/gait/unco-ordinated limbs
If you have a bilateral cerebellar injury what will happen?
Slow, slurred speech, staggering gait (alcohol)
State three functions of the basal ganglia
Facilitate purposeful movement
Inhibit unwanted movement
Role in posture and muscle tone
Name the parts of the basal ganglia
Caudate nucleus Putamen Globus pallidus Subthalamic nucleus Substantia nigra
What makes up the lenticular nucleus?
Putamen and globus pallidus
What forms the striatum?
Caudate nucleus and putamen
