Basal ganglia Flashcards
functional basal ganglia
caudate nucleus putamen globus pallidus - interna&externa subthalamus substantia nigra: pars compacts, pars reticulata
what part of substantia nigra contains melanin?
Pars compacta
What produces dopamine?
pars compacta
Basal ganglia involved in
normal initiation, control and cessation of movement
as well as
cognitive processes and emotion
Internal circuitry of basal ganglia
- Cortex excites
- Caudate + putamen =striatum
- Inhibits globus pallidus interna, substantia nigra, pars reticula
- inhibits thalamus
- excites cortex
The direct pathway + effect on movement
leads to excitation of the cortex from the thalamus
facilitates ongoing movement
The indirect pathway
Leads to inhibition of the cortex from the thalamus
inhibits unwanted movement
in terms of contraction and relaxation
direct contracts
indirect relaxes
Role of substantia nigra, pars compacta
releases dopamine which modulates movement: to INITIATE movement
how does substantia nigra initiate movement
two paths which BOTH release dopamine but act on different receptors
substantia nigra has what effect on the receptors… what does this mean
excites the direct pathway
inhibits the indirect pathway which removes the inhibition, exciting the cortex
