Barriers to Reproduction Flashcards
What are the 2 types of barriers to reproduction?
Prezygotic and Postzygotic
Define Prezygotic Reproductive Barriers
Barriers that prevent mating or fertilization
Define Postzygotic Reproductive Barriers
Barriers that prevent development of fertile adults
What the the 5 Prezygotic Reproductive Barriers?
- Habitat isolation
- Temporal isolation
- Behavioural isolation
- Mechanical isolation
- Gamete isolation
What is habitat isolation?
Species may have different habitats so they do not come in contact with one another
What is temporal isolation?
Species have different mating or flowering seasons or times of day. They may become sexually mature at a different time of year. This may prevent other species from mating with each other.
What is behavioural isolation?
There is little to no sexual attraction between males and females of different species due to behaviour or physiology.
What is mechanical isolation?
Structural differences in genitalia or flowers prevent copulation or pollen transfer between 2 species.
What is gamete isolation?
Male and female gametes die before uniting or just fail to unite.
What are the 3 Postzygotic Reproductive Barriers?
- Hybrid inviability
- Hybrid Sterility
- Hybrid Breakdown
What is hybrid Inviability?
Hybrid zygotes fail to develop or reach sexual maturity
What is hybrid sterility?
Hybrid fails to produce functional gametes
What is hybrid breakdown?
Offspring of hybrid are weak or infertile
