Pathology
Prolonged exposure to gastric acid causes the normal squamous stratified epithelium of the oesophagus to be replaced by columnar epithelium
This is a form of intestinal metaplasia
What is it called when the epithelium is replaced by a different type?

Describe the oesophagus appearance in Barrett’s?
Red and Velvety
Complications of Barrett’s Oesophagus?
Carries the risk of developing into Oesophageal adenocarcinoma
What is it called when the cells become cancerous
Dyplasia
Treatment
Can’t be reversed
Can treat symptoms same way as GORD
PPIs, Antacids, Lifestyle Changes
Symptoms?
Heartburn
Retrosternal Chest pain, worse after eating
Worse on lying down
Investigations?
Endoscopy Biopsy (Check for cancer)
