What is the Purpose of shampooing
- Shampoo cleanse the hair and scalp and prepare them for further suervices
- Shampoo emulsifies the water to lift dirt
- Frequency depends on length of hair and condition
- Shorter hair should be washed more frequently
What Shampoo do you recommend for the following hair types and problems?
- dry
oily
A shampoo that contains oils
A citrus based ingredient
To Open cuticle - use hot water and soap based shampoo
What are the three techniques for shampooing?
Rotary - smal rotations
Effleurage - slow palm strokes
Petrissage - Deep kneading movement
How do you avoid tangling long hair when shampooing?
Use rotary movements only at the root of the hair + Effleurage at lengths.
What does Conditioning do?
Restores the PH balance
How do you detangle the hair?
Wide toothed comb and begin at mid lengths and ends.
Name the three layers of hair
Medulla, Cortex, cuticle
What are the functions of the three layers of hair
Medulla - centre of the structire. Not always present. Function not known.
Cortex - Provides strength and elasticity. Where all the changes take place.
Cuticle - can have 6-12v layers. Texture of the hair refers to the size of the cross section of the hair.
What layer of skin does the hair follicle grow into?
Dermis
What muscle is responsible for erecting the hair when frightened or cold?
The arrector Pili
What is the Epidermis?
The top layer of the skin, 5 layers.
What does the dermal papila do?
Supplies nourishment to the hair follicle
What does Melanin do?
It’s a pigment that darkens skin and hair
How much does the hair grow each month?
1.25 cm
How much hair has grown for most men getting their hair cut once every 8 weeks?
1 inch
How many hairs do we lose a day?
80-100 hairs.
What are the growth stages of hair?
Anagen - active growth phase
Catagen - Transition phase
Telogen - growth rest phase
Why do we test the hair?
To identify factors that could affect services
What are the possible consequences of not testing the hair?
Can result in damage to client’s hair and scalp
Failing may result in legal action against salon.
What factors do you need to test the hair for?
Porosity
Elasticity
Incompatability
Strand Test
Skin Test
What are the steps to a skin test?
use PPE
Cleanse area of skin
Follow Manufacturers instruction for mixing
Apply small amount to ear and allow to dry
Tell Client to remove colour immediately if discomfort is experienced
Check after 24-48 hours
Client signs record card confirming test was carried out
Waht can stop of modify the service from happening?
If a client has over processed hair
if a client has had incompatibility with previous services
Hair is too dry and brittle.
What is Fragilitis Crinium and what should be done about it?
Split ends should be referred to a stylist
What is Psoriasis?
silvery dry scales
What is Pityriasis Capitis
Dandruff
What is Alopecia Ariata
bald patches on scalp
What is scabies
Itchy skin and red spots. Service should not be carried out.
What is Tines Capitis
Ringworm. Red circular patches on skin. Service should not be carried out.
What is Pediculosis Capitis
Head Lice. Small specks attached to teh hair shaft close to the scalp.
What is Folliculitis.
Yellow Pustules with hair in the centre. Requires Medical attention.
