bantustans Flashcards
was is the definition of bantustans
a negative word for the reserves where black people were meant to be citizens
how was it formed
in the 1960’s the prime minister turned the reserves (1913 land act ) into ten separate homelands called bantustans
every African in SA belonged to one of these homelands based on the language they spoke
what did the prime mister claim and what did he do to prove to the world that SA is still a democratic country
he claimed that these homelands were separate and independent countries
to prove to the world that SA is still a democratic country he allowed the africans to
1.have full political right in these homelands (they were allowed to vote for a leader for their homeland )
but they didn’t have political rights in SA because they were not seen as citizens of SA
2.an they would develop separately and independently form whites
what impact did the bantustans have on the lives of people
when the government began to force people to move to into the bantustans it caused a lot of hardship for the African ppl
they lost their land and know they weren’t able to make a living in the bantustans
bantustans was poverty stricken, they were no facilities etc
what happened to families in bantustans
families were forced split up
men would have to go to the white areas to look for work and the women and children stayed in the reserves
the women relied on money sent to them by their husbands to support themselves and their children
