A

in the 1960’s the prime minister turned the reserves (1913 land act ) into ten separate homelands called bantustans

every African in SA belonged to one of these homelands based on the language they spoke

he claimed that these homelands were separate and independent countries

to prove to the world that SA is still a democratic country he allowed the africans to

1.have full political right in these homelands (they were allowed to vote for a leader for their homeland )
but they didn’t have political rights in SA because they were not seen as citizens of SA

2.an they would develop separately and independently form whites

A

when the government began to force people to move to into the bantustans it caused a lot of hardship for the African ppl

they lost their land and know they weren’t able to make a living in the bantustans

bantustans was poverty stricken, they were no facilities etc

A

families were forced split up

men would have to go to the white areas to look for work and the women and children stayed in the reserves

the women relied on money sent to them by their husbands to support themselves and their children
