Bandura et al Flashcards
study
Aim
-to investigate whether a child would learn aggression by observing a model and would reproduce this behavior in the absence of the model, and whether the sex of the role model was imp
Hypotheses
- 4 hypotheses
- observed aggressive behavior will be imitated
- observed non-aggressive behavior will be imitated
- children are more likely to copy a same-sex model
- boys will be more likely to copy aggression than girls
Imitative(social learning)
-the learning of a new behavior which is observed in a role model and imitated later in the absence of that model.
IV
- 3 IVs
- model type: aggressive model, non-aggressive or no model
- model gender
- learner gender
DV
- learning the child displayed
- measured through a controlled observation of the children and measures of aggressive behavior were recorded
Sample
- 72 children
- aged 3-6
- Stanford University Nursery School
Procedure
- Rated on four 5 point scale on physical aggression, verbal aggression, aggression to inanimate objects and aggression inhibition(anxiety)
- 51 children rated by two observers
- highly correlated r=0.89
Procedure (II)
-mildly annoyed for 2 reasons
=watching aggression may reduce the production of aggression by the observer
=to ensure that even the non-aggressive condition and control would be likely to express aggression
-observed through a one-way mirror for 20 mins
-observed in 5 secs interval, total 240 reponses
-2 scored the behaviour, reliability high, around r=0.9
Responses
- Imitation of physical aggression
- Imitative verbal aggression
- Imitative non-aggressive verbal responses
- Partially Imitative aggression
- mallet aggression
- sits on the Bobo doll - Aggressive gun play
- Non-imitative physical and verbal aggression
Results
- Children exposed to aggressive models imitated their exact behaviors and were significantly more aggressive, both physically and verbally, than those children in the non-aggressive or control groups.
- mean for imitative physical aggression for males: 25.8
- girls: 7.2
Conclusion
-all 4 hypotheses were supported
