Find out if children would show more aggressive behaviour if exposed to aggressive role model vice versa and if sex of role model and child makes any differnce
Sample
36 boy and 36 girls
3-5 years mean age of 4 1/3 yrs
Matched pairs based on predetermined aggression, sex, age
Procedure (3)
1st Stage: Modelling Room: observe model aggressive to Bobo doll or not depending on condition
2nd Stage: Arousal Room: child told toys for other children
3rd Stage: Observation Room: 20 mins, behaviour recorded every 5 secs by 2 observers
Results (5)
Aggressive condition: more aggression physical and verbal resembled script for model
Non-aggressive condition: little aggression. 70% score of 0
In general, male RM had bigger impact than female RM for both conditions
Boys physical aggression after MRM 25.8 vs girls after FRM 5.5
Boys verbal aggression after MRM 12.7 vs girls after FRM 13.7
Conclusion (4)
Behaviour can be learnt through imitation even if it isn’t reinforced
MRM more influential than FRM & boys more likely to engage in physical aggression (culture)
Verbal aggression sex-typed w. girls imitating FRM and boys w. MRM
Aggressive RM weakens social inhibitions
