What is privlege?
A
Unearned advantages (e.g. opportunities) conferred systematically (THINK: intentionally/deliberately setting up “the system” to favour X)
- Class of advantages that are bestowed upon a particular group/category of individuals

Privilege as unearned advantages
A
- Granted automatically based on membership in dominant social group
- Earned advantages: rewards, positions
- Impracticable to separate privilege and earned advantages: More privilege, easier to earn advantages

- Privilege granted to members of dominant group on the basis of membership in dominate group (alone)
- Unearned benefits +immunites to members of group based on moral luck
- Dominant group values/norms define what is socially acceptable +desirable or valuable

- Mechanism of privilege intentionally structured to appear invisible privileged persons - Left unexamined…unrecognizable as privilege
- Position interpreted as default position

- Think wild card factor
- Privilege creates more opportunities than earned advantage in a wider variety of domain
- Playing privilege card almost always confers additional benefts
- Ex. Easier to get through security if white name
