What is bacterial vaginosis?
An infection of the vagina
Caused by an imbalance in natural bacteria levels
Often results in discomfort and pain
What is the key anaerobic bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis?
Gardnerella vaginalis
What are the risk factors for bacterial vaginosis? (5)
Excessive vaginal cleaning
Multiple/new sexual partners
Recent antibiotic use
Smoking
Use of a copper coil
What is the characteristic presentation of bacterial vaginosis?
Fishy smelling discharge
Grey or white watery discharge
Which cells may be seen in the cervix in a patient with bacterial vaginosis on a wet mount?
Clue cells
What is the management for bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy?
400mg for 5 days during pregnancy
For bacterial vaginosis, which diagnostic method would be most useful?
- urine NAAT
- Gram stain
- TVUS
- Urinalysis

Management of bacterial vaginosis?
Self limiting if asymptomatic
Metronidazole or clindamycin 2g* stat

- Vaginal candidiasis

- Atrophic Vaginitis
What pH is expected for Bacterial vaginosis?
> 4.5. (Alkaline)
What is a positive whiff test?
Adding 10% potassium hydroxide produces fishy odour
What criteria is used for BV?
Amsels:
Need 3/4
- pH above 4.5
- grey or milky discharge
- + whiff test
- clue cells on wet mount
