Bacterial STDs Flashcards
Neisseria gonorrhea- Characteristics (5)
Gram-negative diplococci
Intracellular (inside neutrophils)
Thayer-Martin medium (chocolate agar with antibiotics)
Incubated in CO2 atmosphere
Oxidase positive
Neisseria gonorrhea- Virulence factors (4)
1- Pili —> attachment to mucosal surface and anti-phagocytic
2-LOS (Lipooligosaccharide) —> modified form of endotoxin
3- IgA protease —> Breaks down secretory antibody
4- Porin A —> In cell wall breaks down C3b complement (contributes to serum resistance)
Disseminated gonnococcal infections (6)
1- Arthritis
2- Tenosynovitis (inflammation of sheath that covers tendon)
3- Skin ulcer
4- Infections of throat, ano-rectum (homosexuals), and eyes
Primary syphilis
Chancre at site of inoculation
Secondary syphilis
Rash (may be accompanied by hepatitis, meningitis, glomerulonephritis)
Latent syphilis
No symptoms- Latent period 3-30 years
Tertiary syphilis
Gumma (granuloma) of skin- Degeneration of nervous system and CV problems
Chlamaydia trachomatis- Characteristics (4)
1- Energy-dependent Intracellular bacteria growing in mammalian cells
2- Two forms: RB (replicative) and EB (infectious)
3- Resistance to B-lactams
4- Suscpetible to Tetracycline and Erythromycin
Chlamaydia trachomatis- Disease
Lymphogranuloma Venereum
- Male and female
- Bilateral
Haemophilus ducreyi- Cultivation
Chocolate agar with Isovitalex (growth supplement with vitamins, NAD, sulphur-containing amino acids)
Klebsiella granulomatous- Cultivation
Grown in monocytes and Hep-2-cells (Human laryngeal carcinoma cells)
Klebsiella granulomatous- Staining
Geimsia stain
Demonstration of Intracellular bacteria inside macrophages (Donovan bodies)
Gardnerella vaginalis- Characteristics (4)
1- Gram-variable, Pleimorphic, Microaerobic bacilli
2- Bacterial vaginosis (with other bacteria)
3- Rotten fish smell —> amines —> tested by adding 10% KOH on slide
4- Clue cells (epithelial cells covered with bacteria) present in discharge and pH > 4.5
