Bacterial Pathogens Flashcards
1
Q
Endospore
A
A dormant and non reproductive form that is highly resistant to environmental change. Some gram negative bacteria can form endospores
2
Q
Cutaneous anthrax
A
- endospore enters through cut on skin
- forms a non painful lesson
- most common form
3
Q
Inhalation anthrax
A
- endospores are inhaled
- can occur from working with the wool of infected animals
- infects the lymph nodes and lungs
4
Q
Gastrointestinal anthrax
A
- endospores are ingested usually in the meat of an infected animal
- leads to lots of GI symptoms and can ultimately lead to organ shut down
5
Q
Gonorrhea
A
- gram negative
- needs a human host
- transmitted from direct human contact
- binds to CD4 cells and inhibits activation
- does not lead to immunity to reinfection
6
Q
Male gonorrhea
A
- probability of infect from single exposure is 25%
- 90% of males are symptomatic
- discharge from penis contains PMNs with intracellular bacteria
7
Q
Female gonohrrea
A
- probability of infection from single exposure is 40% except females on oral contraception is 90%
- 80% of females are asymptomatic
- can be passed down to child and/or lead to pelvic inflammatory disease
