Bacteria - Structure Flashcards
Describe the cell wall of a bacteria
It is rigid and surrounds the bacterial cell to give it structure
What is found directly within the cell wall of a bacteria?
The cell membrane
What does the cell membrane of a bacteria enclose?
The cytoplasm
What is a cytoplasm?
A colourless liquid found within the cell membrane which contains cell organelles
What does the cytoplasm of a bacteria contain?
Nuclear material (DNA)
Ribosome
Food vacuole
What is the function of the nuclear material (DNA) of a bacteria?
It controls the cell
What do the ribosomes of a bacteria do?
They allow for protein synthesis
What can sometimes surround the cell wall of a bacteria?
A capsule
What is a capsule?
A thick, gel-like protective layer that surrounds the cell wall
What is the function of the capsule?
To protect the bacteria from engulfment by white blood cells
What is found on some bacteria which allow for movement?
Flagella
What are flagella?
Long, thread-like structures which assist in the movement of a bacteria
