Bacteria Flashcards
Bacteria kingdoms and 2 characteristics
Eubacteria/Archaebacteria
unicellular/prokaryotic (no nucleus)
General characteristics of bacteria
cell wall
one circular chromosome
measured in micrometers (1-10 long)
move using a flagella
which process do bacteria reproduce?
binary fission, asexually
what is a plasmid?
small loops/circles of DNA in a bacteria
some bacteria swap plasmid material through small tunnels called PILI. This is called conjugation.
examples of archaebacteria
Methanogens, Extreme halophiles, Thermoacidophiles
halo= salt philes=likes
Eubacteria
prokaryotic, aerobic and anaerobic, E. coli, Anabaena and Salmonella
3 shapes of bacteria
Coccus (round) Bacillus (rod) Spirillum (spiral)
Antibiotics
toxic to bacteria, prevents them from growing and reproducing
each antibiotic is specific to a certain type of bacteria
they only attack bacteria cells; do NOT effect our cells
DO NOT work on viruses
Antibiotic Resistance
AB destroys all the weak and vulnerable bacteria (weak killed 1st, strong survive and more resources for them), a few resistant bacteria are able to survive and reproduce who then become the dominant type and plasmids containing AB resistant genes can pass between them during CONJUGATION which is a source of genetic variation
Antibiotic resistance is increasing because…
increased usage of antibiotics
improper prescription and uses of antibiotics (might kill of good, bad and weak bacteria you have) because Dr.s are prescribing AB at an alarming rate
