Backing up and Restoring VMs. Flashcards
Snapshot Requierments.
Allows for static image of VM.
VMWare Data Protection Requirements and Guidlines.
VADP: API from VMWare used for backup.
VDP: Backup appliance from VMWare for all licenses except Essentials.
Requirements to Install VDP:
- vCenter Server 5.1 or later.
- vSphere Web Client .
- Web Browser with Flash.
- ESXi 4.0 or higher hosts.
VMWare Data Protection Sizing Guidelines.
- Can create backups without interrupting their use.
- Supports deduplication.
- Integrated with vCenter Server using vSphere client.
- Deduplcation datastores can be VMDKs, RDMs or CIFS shares.
- Max 2TB deduplicated data storage.
- Each backup can contain max of 100 VMs but you can only back up 8 VMs simultaneaously.
- Each vCenter server can manage up to 10 VDP appliances, each with 100 VMs.
- Can be installed in small, medium and large configurations.
Considerations: Number of VMs Types of VMs. Retention Period. Typical change rate: Changed Block Retention.
VMWare Data Protection Version Offerings.
6.0: Al VDP functionality included in Essentials Plus kit and above.
vSphere Replication Architecture.
vSphere Replication Appliance provides all the components required to perform vSphere Replication.
- Plug-on to the vSphere client.
- Embedded Database.
- vSphere Replication Management Server.
- vSphere Replication Server.
Once instance is deployed at the primary site, second instance is deployed at the secondary site.

Creating/Deleting/Consolidating VM Snapshots.
Including memory with snapshot takes longer but you can then revert the VM to a previous state without it having to be powered off.
If you don’t include memory in snapshot, reverting to a previous state will result in the VM being powered down will start up with new “memories”.
Quiescing the file system (Requires VM Tools to be installed) is recommended when using the snapshot as a backup.
Review page 696. Snapshots after You Are Here are deleted, snapshots before You Are Here are consolidated into the VM .
Installing and Configuring VDP.
Installed as OVA appliance.
Installing, Configuring and Upgrading vSphere Replication.
Designed to help an organization augment its recovery capability by continually replicating a running VM to another location.

Destination site can be local or remote.
Included with all licenses from Essentials Plus up.
Integrated into vSPhere.
Fully integrated with MS VSS for MSSQL
- Plugin to the vSphere web client.
- Embedded db that stores replication configuration and management information.
- The vSphere Replication management server.

Recovering a VM Using vSphere Replication.

Perform Failback Operation Using vSphere Replication.
In failback, replication is reversed. VMDKs on primary site are used as “seeds” for “reverse” replication.
However, before reversing replication, you must unregister the VM from the primary site.
Determining Appropriate Backup Solution for a Given vSphere Implementation.
VDP good for small sites with fewer than 100 server VMs. VMware has API (VADP) that can be used by larger sites for third-party products.
