Q

Humoral Pathology

A

A concept that dated back to the Greeks and was very prominent in the 18th Century. Diseases are due to an imbalance of 4 Fluid Humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and Black Bile

Q

Marie Francois Xavier Bichat

A

Father of modern Histology
Perception that the diverse body organs contain particular tissues or membranes; he described 21 Membranes
Treatise on Membranes (1799) First Histology Book
Did not use a microscope (because he distrusted them)
Life divided into 2 Parts: organic (vegetative) life and the animal life
-organic life was the life of the heart, intestines, and other organs
-Organic life was regulated by small, independent, thoracic brains (Ganglionic nervous system)
-animal life was composed of symmetrical organs such as eyes, ears, and limbs.
- Animal life included habitat and and memory and was ruled by wit and intellect

Introduced notion that tissues are distinct entities and that disease attack tissues rather than whole organs

Q

Rudolph Cal Virchow

A

Pioneered Idea of Cell theory ( Did not invent whole theory but introduced the concept)
Omnis Cellulae e Cellulae- all cells come from cells
Coupled histology and pathology
Gave lectures to physicians

17
Q

Omnis Cellulae e Cellulae

A

all cells come from Cells

Term used by Rudolph Carl Virchow and is the key concept behind the cell theory
