Back Myology Flashcards
What are the shapes of skeletal muscle? (9)
flat, pennate, fusiform, digastric, multiventral, multicaudal, serrated, circular/sphincteral, quadrate
What are pennate muscles? What are the types?
feather-like; types describe where muscle is on side of tendon
unipennate
bipennate
multipennate
What are fusiform muscles? What are the types?
spindle-shaped w/ thick belly and tapered ends; name of type describes how many heads/origins
bicipital
tricipital
quadracipital
What are digastric muscles?
muscle with 2 bellies separated by tendon
What are multiventral muscles?
1 muscle broken up by multiple tendons (ab muscles)
What are multicaudal muscles?
(caudal = tail) Muscle with multiple tails/tendons
What are serrated muscles?
muscles with a serrated edge; usually attach to ribs
What are circular or sphincteral muscles?
surrounding an opening
What are quadrate muscles?
equal sided; square
What does the agonist do in movement?
activates a specific movement
What does the antagonist do?
opposes the action of the agonist
What does the synergist do?
complements the agonist and prevents the movement of an intervening joint when agonist passes more than one joint
what does the fixator do?
stabilizes joints or proximal part of a joint while the distal portion is in motion
