Bacillus, Listeria, Corynebacterium, Clostridium Flashcards
What is unique about bacillus and clostridium?
They produce spores. Bacillsu is aerobic, Clostridium is anaerobic
B. cereus spores create which symptoms
emetic syndrome (rapid onset within 5 hours, vomitting, fried rice) and diarrheal syndrome (slow onset 8-16 hours after eating)
How are B. cereus symptoms treated?
Supportive care (fluids)
How is bacillus anthracis differentiated?
It is NONMOTILE while other bacillus are motile
What are the three clinical manifestations of anthrax toxin released by bacillus anthracis?
GI anthrax, cutaneous anthrax, inhalation anthrax
You have a gram positive, spore-forming rod. If it is then tested and shown to be nonmotile, what bacteria is it?
bacillus anthracis
This gram positive, spore-forming, motile bacteria is used to test autoclave efficacy
bacillus stearothermophilus
Describe clostridium
gram positive, spore-forming, anaerobic, rod shaped, look like tennis racket, found in soil/water/GI tracts
Clostridium perfringens causes…
food poisoning, gas gangrene
What are the three types of botulism?
food-borne, infant, wound
What is unique about listeria?
gram positive, coccobaccillus, does not produce toxins or enzymes, virulence related to bacteria’s ability to live within cells
What disease does corynebacterium cause?
diptheria toxin produced, which inhibits protein syntehsis causing cell death.
