Notable feature of the Continuo movement 1
Ostinato present for all but six bars
Movement 1 ostinato
repeated notes and descending chromatic movement. Most often found in continuo doubled by basses. Sung in imitation by voices starting with altos-tenors basses or tenors-altos-basses. Oboe and violin play it I occasionally.
Ritornello theme features
dotted rhythm. 5ths and 6ths leaps. Played by flute oboe and violin
New movement 1 theme
introduced halfway through and features a leap of a 4th followed by repeated notes. Set in imitation with counter melody in bass of 2 semiquavers and a quaver. Section features sequences / antiphonal dialogue/ dominant pedal notes
Similarites m1 and m7
-g minor key /
-full SATB chorus and all instruments / -both feature the hymn “Jesus der du meine seele”
Differences m1 and m7
-m1 is contrapuntal with imiation. m7 is homophonic
-m1 there is seperate instrumental parts to vocals. m7 instruments play the vocal parts.
-m1 has other themes(ostinato/ritornello). m7 only has hymn tune.
-m1 is 3/4. m7 is 4/4
Tierce de picardie in m1
when a piece in a minor key ends on a major tonic. Piece is g minor but ends in g major.
Movement 7 cadences
bar 4 imperfect. Bar 8 imperfect. Bar 10 perfect. Bar 12 perfect. Bar 16 perfect tierce de picardie.
Movement 7 form
AABC. First 2 bars of B section are in F major and next 2 are sequence of previous 2 in Bb.
