B9 Revision Flashcards
What type of reaction is aerobic respiration?
An exothermic reaction
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + Oxygen - Carbon dioxide + Water (Energy)
What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
C6 H12 O6 + 6O2 - 6CO2 + 6H2O
Where does aerobic take place in your cells?
The mitochondria
What are 3 examples of body responses to excercise
An increase in heart rate and breath volume, glycogen stores in the muscles are converted to glucose for cellular respiration, the flow of oxygenated blood to the muscles increase
What is the energy transferred during respiration used for?
To enable muscles to contract
Why is anaerobic respiration sometimes needed?
Because when you excersise hard, not enough oxygen is transferred to the muscles fast enough, so lactic acid is used as an energy store instead of oxygen
What is the formula for anaerobic respiration
Glucose - Lactic acid (Energy)
Does aerobic respiration or anaerobic respiration produce more energy?
Aerobic respiration
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and microorganisms?
glucose - ethanol + carbon dioxide
What is metabolism
It is the sum of all reactions that take place in a cell or in the body
Give 3 examples of metabolic reactions
The conversion of glucose to starch, glycogen and cellulose, the reactions of respiration, the reactions of photosynthesis.
