B8 photosynthesis Flashcards
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
An endothermic reaction
What is the formula for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water –light——glucose + oxygen
Name 3 ways in which leaves are adapted to photosynthesise
They are broad giving them a large surface area for light to fall on
.They contain chloroplasts to absorb light
. They have veins which bring water in the xylem to the cells of the leaves
What are the main limiting factors of photosynthesis
Light, temperature, carbon dioxide concentration and chlorophyll levels in the leaf
As the light intensity increases what happens to the rate of photosynthesis?
It increases
As the temperature increases what happens to the rate of
It increases
What happens if the temperature reaches above 40 degrees Celsius?
The enzymes are denatured and the rate of photosynthesis falls.
As the carbon dioxide concentration increases what happens to the rate of photosynthesis
It increases
Why does glucose have to be converted to starch in plants?
Because glucose is soluble in water so if it was stored in plant cells, it could affect the way water moves in and out of cells. (Starch is insoluble in water)
Where is starch stored?
The cells of a leaf
Why do plants need to live in nitrate-ion rich soil?
Because the nitrates are needed to create vital amino acids for the plants to make proteins
Name 3 plants that don’t need to live in Nitrate rich soils
Pitcher plants, venus flytraps and sundews
Where do carnivorous plants get their minerals from?
The insects that they digest
What are the 4 main things that plants use their glucose to make?
Starch, cellulose, amino acids and lipids
What are the 4 main things used for?
Cellulose: To strengthen the cell walls, Starch: For energy store, Amino acids for growth and development and Lipids for an energy store.
Name all the strucutres of the leaf
Upper epidermis, Palisade cells, Air space, Guard cell, Lower epidermis, Xylem tubes, Phloem`
What is the function of the upper epidermis
It protects the leaf and is transparent to let light through
What is the function of the palisade cells
They are where photosynthesis takes place
What is the function of the Air space
For the diffusion of gases (Such as Co2 and O2)
What is the function of the Guard cell?
It opens and closes the stomata
What is the function of the Lower epidermis
It lets water vapour in and out
What is the function of the Xylem tubes?
They transport water and minerals
What is the function of phloem tubes
It Transports dissolved sugars
