B9 respiration Flashcards
what is respiration
exothermic reaction which is continuously occurring in living cells.
what does aerobic mean
with oxygen
what does anaerobic mean
without oxygen
what do organisms need energy for
- chemical reactions to build larger molecules
- movement
- keeping warm.
what is the equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
what happens to glucose in anerobic respiration
the glucose is not completely broken down meaning it transfers much less energy than aerobic respiration
what is the equation for anerobic respiration in animals/muscles
glucose = lactic acid
what is the equation for anerobic respiration in plant and yeast cells
glucose = ethanol + carbon dioxide
what is Anaerobic respiration in yeast cells is called
fermentation
why is fermentation important
it is important in the manufacture of bread and alcoholic drinks
what does the body do during exercise
reacts to an increased demand of energy
what factors increase during exercise
The heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume increase during
exercise to supply the muscles with more oxygenated blood
what happens to muscles during periods of vagarous exercise
muscles don’t get supplied with enough oxygen
anaerobic respiration takes place in the muscle cells
the incomplete oxidation of glucose causes a build up of lactic acid
muscles stop contracting as efficiently
what happens once exercise is finished
the oxygen debt must be repaid
what is oxygen debt
Oxygen debt is the amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to react with the accumulated lactic acid and remove it from the cells
