B8 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water → oxygen + glucose
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → 6O₂ + C₆H₁₂O₆
→ = sunlight and chlorophyll
Factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis
Light
Temperature
Carbon dioxide concentration
Glucose in a plant
Can be stored as starch (in leaves, seeds, roots)
Cellulose strengthens cell walls
Growth and repair for damaged cells or tissues
Used in respiration
Energy stored as sucrose
Poly tunnels
Plastic tunnels which cover plants outside
Increases temperature = more photosynthesis
Hydroponic growing system
Growing plants without soil, grows in water with mineral ions
Amount of nutrients can be controlled, no shortage of H2O
Science lab
One factor of photosynthesis can be changed at a time
We can find out the limiting factors
Artificial lighting
Photosynthesis takes place for 244 hours a day
More light = more photosynthesis
Features of a leaf
Stalk supplies the leaf with H2O and transports sugars
Midrib supports the leaf
Large surface area = more sunlight absorbed
Thin = higher rate of diffusion
