B7.028/029 Prework: Brainstem Lesions Flashcards
1
Q
why are CNs different than spinal nerves
A
- exit at regular intervals
- components of each nerve vary more than spinal nerves
- brainstem structure and function varies by level more than the spinal cord
2
Q
common brainstem lesion etiology
A
stroke
3
Q
anterior spinal artery
A
midline artery of medulla
4
Q
vertebral arteries
A
lateral arteries of medulla
5
Q
posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA)
A
wraps around middle of the medulla
6
Q
anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA)
A
wraps around bottom of pons
7
Q
what are motor nuclei in the brainstem
A
- motor neurons that live in the brainstem; axons exit in cranial nerves and innervate head and neck muscle
- analogous to ventral horn
- includes parasympathetic preganglionics
8
Q
what are sensory nuclei in the brainstem
A
- receive sensory information from primary receptor neurons
- analogous to dorsal column nuclei, substantia gelatinosa for body sensation
- may receive autonomic afferent information
