B6 Preventing and treating Disease Flashcards
What is a vacine?
Substances containing disabled antigens of a particular disease, usually administered via injection. Vaccines stimulate the body to produce antibodies to provide immunity against that disease.
what does a pathogen do when it enters your body?
if a pathogen enters the body the immune system tries to destroy the pathogen.
what is a pathogen?
Microorganism that causes disease
what does a vaccination involve?
- Vaccination involves introducing small amounts of dead or inactive forms of a pathogen into your body to stimulate the white blood cells to produce antibodies
- If the same live pathogen re-enters the body, the white blood cells respond quickly to produce the correct antibodies, preventing infection.
What do painkillers and other medicines do?
Painkillers and other medicines treat the symptoms of disease but do not kill the pathogens that cause it.
What do Antibiotics cure?
Antibiotics cure bacterial diseases by killing the bacterial pathogens inside your body.
why don’t Antibiotics destroy viruses?
-Antibiotics do not destroy viruses because viruses reproduce inside the cells. It is difficult to develop drugs that can destroy viruses without damaging your body cells.
What is the problem with Strains of Bacteria.
Strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics are evolving. This means that antibiotics which used to killing a particular type of bacteria no longer have an effect, so they cannot cure the disease.
What is Preclinical testing?
Preclinical testing of new drugs takes place in a laboratory on cells. tissues , and live animals.
