B6 Preventing and treating disease Flashcards
What is vaccination?
Introducing dead of inactive small amounts of pathogens into your body to stimulate white blood cells to produce antibodies.
what happens if a pathogen enters the body
the immune system tries to destroy it
state what vaccinations do
-small amounts of dead or inactive forms of a pathogen is introduced into your body
-to stimulate the white blood cells to produce antibodies
pros of vaccination
-helped control communicable diseases that were ONCE common in the UK, EG- measles, smallpox, polio
cons of vaccination
-don’t always work
-can have a bad reaction to the vaccine
what do painkillers do for diseases
treat the symptoms but do not kill pathogens that cause it
explain how antibiotics work differently
cure bacterial diseases by killing the bacterial pathogens inside the body
-they’ve reduced deaths from infectious diseases
state how traditioanlly drugs were extracted
-from plants e.g digitals or
-from micro-organisms e.g penicillin
who was Penicillin discovered by
Alexander Fleming from Penicillium mould
-in 1928
What are new drugs tested for?
-Efficacy,
-Toxicity,
-Dosage
What is preclinical testing?
Testing in a lab on cells, tissues and live animals.
where are new drugs tested
in the labortary using cells, tissues and live animals
What are clinical trials?
trials that use healthy volunteers and patients. -Low doses are used for safety, followed by higher doses to test for optimum dose.
what happens in double blind trials
some patients are given a placebo
