Adaptations, interdependance and competition Flashcards
adaptations allow…
organisms to survive
What is an Ecosystem?
The interaction of a community of living organisms with the non living (abiotic) parts of the environment.
What is interdependence?
Animals and plants depending on one another for food, shelter etc
What is a stable community?
One where all species and environmental factors are in balance so that population sizes remain fairly constant.
state what plants need in order to survive and reproduce
light and space, as well as water and mineral ions from soil
state what animals need in order to survive and reproduce
space (territory)
food
water
mates
name 3 abitiotic factors
-moisture level
-light intensity
-temperature
state the difference between abiotic and biotic factors
abiotic are non living factors
biotic are living factors
Name some biotic factors
Availability of food
New predators
New pathogens
New competitors
state what you would do to use transects and quadrats
-which species
-which factor will you investigate
-what will you do
explain the function of a quadrat
sample area used for measuring the abundance and distribution of organisms in a field
Name three things which animals compete for
Food, Territory, Mates
state how a artic animal is adapted
arctic fox
-has white fur so camouflaged against the snow
-helps to avoid predators
state how animals living in cold evironments are adapted
whales
-thick layer of blubber
-low surface area to volume ratio to help them retain heat
state how animals in hot places is adapted
camels
-thin layers of fat
-large surface area to volume ratio to help them lose heat
