B4.1.3 Competitipn And Interdependence Flashcards
What do plants need to survive
Light
Water
Carbon dioxide
Minerals
Space
What do animals need to survive
Food
Water
Breeding partners
Space(territory)
Shelter
Population
The number of organisms of each species living in an area
Interdependence
When organisms within a community depend on one another
Interactions between organisms
Ecological relationships
3 main types of ecological relationships
Predation
Mutualism
Parasitism
Predation
Relationship between a predator and a prey species.
Size of predator population directly affects size of prey population
Most famous predator prey study
If population of hares increases there’s a larger food supply for the lynxes
This can therefore support more lynxes so more offspring survive
This growing num of lynxes eventually reduce the food supply
The number of predators decrease
Prey population starts to increase once more
Cycle repeats
Mutualism
A relationship where both organisms benefit
Parasitism
Relationship where only one organism’ (the parasite) gains.
The organisms it lives off of (host) suffers
Example of mutualism
Oxpeckers eat ticks and flies living on buffalo’s skin
They gain food whilst buffalo is free from irritation and potential disease
Example of parasitism
Lice on a humans head
Lice gain energy from the blood, must feed off to survive
