B3.2.3 The Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
What is the menstrual cycle
The monthly cycle during which a woman’s body gets ready for pregnancy. Lasts about 28 days
What happens when egg is fertilised
May implant in uterus lining
Here it’s protected and receives nutrients and oxygen from mum
The woman is now pregnant
What happens if egg is not fertilised
The uterus lining and egg are removed from the body, menstruation
Ovary
Where eggs mature
Uterus
Where the fetus develops
Cervix
The opening of the uterus at the top of the vagina (entrance to uterus)
Vagina
Connects the cervix to the outside of the body
Sperm is deposited here by the penis during sexual intercourse
Fallopian tube(oviduct)
Carries the ovum from the ovary to the uterus
Egg is fertilised here
Ovum
Female sex cell , sometimes called an ‘egg’
How many hormones is the menstrual cycle controlled by
4
What hormones control menstrual cycle
Follicle stimulating hormone
Oestrogen
Progesterone
Luteinising hormone
FSH
Secreted by pituitary gland
Travels to ovaries where ur causes egg to mature
STIMULATES OVARIES TO PRODUCE OESTROGEN
Oestrogen
Made and secreted by ovaries
Causes the lining of the uterus to build up
AS OESTROGEN LEVELS RISE THEY INHIBIT FSH PRODUCTION
THIS WOULD PREVENT MORE THAN ONE EGG MATURING
WOULD ALSO STIMULATE PITUITARY GLAND TO RELEASE LH
LH
When LH levels reach a peak in the middle of the cycle, ovulation is triggered
Progesterone
Maintains uterus lining
Levels of this hormone remain high during pregnancy
INHIBITS LH
