B3.1.5 Nervous System Damage Flashcards
Two systems of mammalian nervous system
CNS
PNS
How can nervous system damage occur
Injury
Disease
Genetic condition
Ingesting a toxic substance
Damage to the PNS
Inability to detect pain
Numbness
Loss of coordination
Damage to CNS
Loss of control of body systems
Partial or complete paralysis
Memory loss or processing difficulties
CNS regeneration
It can’t
Any damage is permanent unless it can be corrected by surgery
PNS regeneration
Limited ability
Minor nerve damage often self heals
More severe nerve damage can be treated through surgery
Treatments for brain conditions
Radio/chemo therapy- treat brain tumour
Surgery remove damaged brain tissue
Deep brain stimulation- inserting an electrode to stimulate brain function
Why is it difficult to identify and repair spinal cord damage
Consists of 31 pairs of nerves each of which have many nerve fibres
Spinal cord is 1.5cm in diameter
Therefore identifying and repairing damage to an individual nerve fibre without damaging others is extremely difficult
Usually lead to permanent loss of function/disability
PARKINSONS
Progressive neurodegenerative disorder
Affects movement and motor function
Characterized by symptoms like tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement and postural instability
Caused by the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain, particularly in the substantia nigra
Treatment options include medication, deep brain stimulation, and physical therapy
