Q

What do arteries do

A

Carry blood away from the heart to your organs. They have thick walls, a thick muscle and elastic fibre layer and a small lumen. Arteries stretch as blood is forced through them.

Q

What do capillaries do

A

Capillaries form a huge network of tiny vessels linking arteries and veins throughout the body. They have walls a single cell thick and have a narrow lumen. This enables substances to diffuse out of the blood in the capillaries into other cells and vice versa.

Q

What do veins do

A

Veins carry blood away from the organs to the heart. They have thin walls, valves and a large lumen. Valves protect from back flow of blood and open to allow blood through. Skeletal muscle actions squeeze blood through the veins.

Q

What are artificial hearts

A

Temporary hearts that support your natural heart until a transplant can take place

Q

What are stents

A

Metal mesh that open up the blood vessel and releases drugs treating clots and some disease

Q

What are statins

A

A pill to reduce blood cholesterol levels slowing down the rate at which fatty materials are deposited into the coronary artery

Q

What are mechanical valves and how do they fix leaky valves

A

Leaky valves are when blood leaks back through the valve, mechanical valves act as regular functioning valves replacing the leaky valves

Q

What are artificial pacemakers

A

They are a mechanical replacement to your natural pacemaker so it controls your heart’s bpm. It does this through electrical impulses.

13
Q

What are some adaptations Alveoli have made

A

Thin walls so air and blood have a short distance to diffuse. Spherical shape for greater surface area. Air coming in and out maintains a steep concentration gradient for diffusion.

16
Q

What do guard cells do

A

Control the opening and closing of the stomata as the plant ‘breathes’. Can shut the gap for prolonged periods to store water vapour if necessary.

17
Q

What does the stomata do

A

Opening that allows Carbon dioxide to enter the leaf and for oxygen and water vapour to leave.

18
Q

Transpiration…

A

When the stomata of a leaf opens and releases the water vapour from the leaf

19
Q

Transpiration stream…

A

Stream of water travelling up towards the leaf that is then turned to vapour.

20
Q

Factors of transpiration…

A

Temperature - Warmer temperature increase rate of transpiration as the particles have more energy to move up the stream and leave quicker

Air movement - Windier conditions increases rate of transpiration as these conditions lead to a steeper concentration gradient.

21
Q

What is plasma

A

The liquid blood is based on. It carries red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

22
Q

What do red blood cells do

A

Pick up oxygen from your lungs and take them to cells that need them

23
Q

What do white blood cells do

A

They form a part of the body’s defence system against harmful microorganisms
