B4 Organising animals and plants Flashcards
what is the xylem
tissue that transports water from roots to leaves
what is the phloem
tissue that transports sap up and down a plant from leaves by translocation
what is the stomata
small holes in the underside of the leaf that allows movement of gasses in and out of the leaf
what are guard cells
cells that control the side of stomata. when they are turgid they become crescent shaped and open the stomata. when they’re flaccid they lose their crescent shape and close the stomata
what is transpiration
evaporation of water from the stomata in windy hot and dry conditions
what is translocation
movement of sap between phloem cells
what is a potometer
equipment used to indirectly measure transpiration by the movement of an air bubble
