B1 Cell structure and transport Flashcards
what is diffusion
the movement of particles from an area of high to low concentration
what is osmosis
the movement of water from an area of high to low concentration through a partially permeable membrane
what is active transport
the movement of substances from a dilute solution to a more concentrated one (from an area of low concertation to high concentration) using energy
what is the equation for magnification
size of image/size of real object
what is the equation for magnification of a microscope
eyepiece x objective lens
what’s the difference between eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells
in eukaryotic cells DNA is confined in a nucleus but in prokaryotic cells DNA is not confined in a nucleus (no nucleus)
what organelles can plant cells have that animal cells wont
cell wall
vacuole
chloroplasts
what is the function of the nucleus
controls all the activities in the cell.
contains the chromosomes that carry the instruction for making proteins
what is the function of the cytoplasm
where most of the chemical reactions take place
what is the function of the cell membrane
controls the movement of substances into the cell and out of the cell
what is the function of the mitochondria
where aerobic respiration takes place
oxygen + glucose -> water + carbon dioxide
what is the function of the ribosomes
where protein synthesis takes place. making all the proteins needed in the cell
what is the function of the chloroplasts
where photosynthesis takes place. contains many chlorophyll that absorbs light.
water + carbon dioxide -> oxygen + glucose
