B16 Adaptations, interdependence and competition Flashcards
what’s a biotic factor
biological (alive) factors affecting organisms
what is a abiotic factor
not biological (not living) factors affecting organisms
what are some biotic factors
food supply
pathogen/ parasite abundance
predator abundance
intraspecific competition
what’s a quadrat
a sample area (normally a wire frame) used to count the organisms in randomly chosen areas of an ecosystem
how can you randomly figure out where to put a quadrat
plot the area (divide then into 1m by 1m squares) and then number each area then use a random number generator to choose which area to put the quadrat into
give some examples of abiotic factors
light intensity
temperature
rainfall
ph of soil
what’s a stable community
a community that stays the same or follows the same repeating patterns of change over time
what do organisms compete for
light
water
food
territory / space
mates
what’s a transect
a line which measurements are made along
what’s interdependence
the relationship between different organisms in an environment
what’s an extremophile
an organism that can survive and reproduce in extreme conditions
what is an adaptations in plants to help store water
storing water in their tissues, leaves, roots or stems
what adaptation do some plants have to help them collect more water
extensive root system, spread very wide or go down a very long way.
what are some adaptions in plants to prevent water loss
thick waxy cuticle preventing water evaporating out of the leaves
curled leaves to reduce SA and traps moist air around the leaf reducing water loss by evaporation
leaves with a very small SA
less stomata
how do plants compete with each other
spread their seeds far away from them
grow earlier then other plants
different types of roots (shallow or deep ones)
bigger leaves to get more light
tendrils or suckers to climb up things to reach the light
