B3 Fighting Disease Flashcards
How do hairs and mucus in your nose help fight diseases?
They trap the particles that contain the pathogens.
How does the skin help prevent diseases?
It can act as a barrier to pathogens. It secretes antimicrobial substances which kill pathogens.
What does the stomach produce to kill pathogens?
Hydrochloric acid.
What is the most important part of the immune system? Why?
White blood cells. Because they are constantly patrolling your body for microbes.
What is the first thing white blood cells do when they find a microbe?
They consume them. They engulf foreign cells and digest them. This is called phagocytosis.
What is the second part of what white blood cells do to microbes?
Produce antibodies. When white blood cells come across foreign antigens. They produce proteins called antibodies. These produce rapidly then kill the pathogen.
What is step 3 of white blood cells defending against pathogens?
Produce antitoxins. These counteract toxins produced by the invading bacteria.
Name a way of fighting disease?
Vaccination.
What are vaccinations and what do they do?
They involve injecting small amounts of dead or inactive pathogens. These carry antigens., which cause your body to produce antibodies to attack them. This causes you to be more immune to diseases like measles.
Pros of vaccination?
Help control common communicable diseases. Big outbreaks of the disease called epidemics can be prevented if large percentage of population are vaccinated.
Cons of vaccination?
Don’t always work
Can have bad reactions(very rare)
