B2 Blood And Blood Vessels Flashcards
There are 3 different types of blood vessels:
Arteries-these carry blood away from the heart
Capillaries- these are involved in the exchange of materials at the tissues
Veins- these carry the blood to the heart.
Describe arteries.
Artery walls have to be strong and elastic because blood is pumped out from heart. They also contain thick layers of muscles. Walls are much more thick compared to lumen.
What is the lumen?
Hole going through all blood vessels.
Describe capillaries?
Thin wall-only one cell thick
Very small lumen
Nucleus of cell
Describe veins
Large lumen
Elastic fibres and smooth muscle
Have valves to keep blood flowing in the right direction
What so red blood cells do?
Carry oxygen
What do white blood cells do?
Defend against infections.
What do platelets do?
Help blood clot
What is plasma
The liquid that carries everything in blood.
What is cardiovascular disease?
Diseases of heart or blood vessels
