B2. Cell Division Flashcards
What is a phloem cell?
A phloem cell is the vascular tissue in charge of transport and distribution of the organic nutrients.
What is the function of a phloem cell?
It is to transport sugars through a plant.
What does a phloem cell have?
A phloem cell has holes in its cell wall at each end. The holes in the cell wall at each end of the phloem cell allows sugars to move from one cell to another.
What is a root hair cell?
The root hair cells are where most water absorption happens. They are long and thin so they can penetrate between soil particles, and they have a large surface area for absorption of water through osmosis. Root hair cells have a large surface area to speed up osmosis.
What is the function of a root hair cell?
It is to absorb water and mineral ions from the soil.
What does a root hair cell contain?
It contains a finger-like protusion which gives the root hair cell a large surface area.
What is xylem?
Xylem is a type of transport tissue in vascular plants.
What is the function of xylem cells?
It is to transport water and mineral salts through a plant.
What does a xylem cell contain?
It contains lignin which gives the cell strength and stops it from bursting.
